Folksy, Vintage: Barn | Real Wedding

I absolutely adore this low key, folksy, vintage inspired barn wedding. Hugh and Basia married in Wales and held their wedding reception in Hugh’s parents barn. They were hoping to have an outdoor wedding reception but the pesky British weather unfortunately got in the way. Hugh and Basia didn’t let a little thing like rain on their wedding day spoil any fun though…

Their wedding looks like so much fun and I love the way Basia injected her personality into her big day, even refusing to be put off from the style of wedding bouquet she wanted by making it herself on the morning! Atta girl!

We wanted a small wedding, quite unique to us and with some personal touches. I like both vintage and rustic themes and I think the wedding was all about these!

I made my bouquet myself. I really wanted a bouquet made of fresias and peonies and all the florists I approached were not very keen on this combo, so I decided to make it myself and added some blue larkspur as well and vintage ribbon. All flowers were sourced locally. I absolutely loved the end result and making it on the wedding morning calmed my nerves a lotJ

We married in St. Issui’s Church, Patrishow in Wales and couldn’t have imagined a more romantic wedding location than this charming little 15th century church, in a beautiful hillside setting in the Black Mountains. The church is also literally just up the hill from Hugh’s parent’s house and so we decided to use their barn as our reception venue. We were hoping for fine summer weather and a drinks reception in the garden, but as the weather was a little ‘unhelpful’, Hugh’s parents kindly let us use their lovely house for the drinks reception after the ceremony.

We decided to brave the rain and we walked down the hill in our wellies :)

I loved my Belle and Bunty dress from the first time I tried it on. It is a very unique design with this vintage feeling that I was looking for. I didn’t want a ‘typical’ wedding dress and I think Belle suited both my figure and personality.

We bought some vintage bunting and had some fairy lights to decorate the brick walls in the barn. For table decorations we had jars with tea lights in them as well some with flowers kindly donated by the family friends. Some of the jars we filled with Percy Pig sweets and tied with a nice ribbon and they were the most popular table decoration.

The wedding cake was made by Hugh’s sister Jane. It was three tear vanilla sponge with vanilla mascarpone filling and icing and decorated with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. It was delicious.

As I am Polish, I wanted to have a bit of a Polish twist to our fairly informal wedding reception. Together with my bridesmaids (two of whom are Polish and dressed in traditional folk dresses) we led a session of folk singing, games, vodka drinking and the session culminated in a very spontaneous conga and high fiving that everybody participated in.

If I could impart any words of wisdom to future brides? Get creative and do something e.g. decorations, that will keep your mind off stressing about the day.
