WTW Wedding Supplier: Natalie Martin Wedding Photography
WTW readers would love to know about you and your photographic journey…
Who or what inspired you to become a wedding photographer?
It was a combination of things really, I had always loved photography since I was a little girl (I vividly remember getting my first camera when I was eight for Christmas) and was always the one with the camera at parties or weddings. A few years ago I landed a wonderful job as the PR Officer at Aardman Animations and it opened my eyes up to a whole new world – people can actually do creative jobs they enjoy…and make a living?
I loved my job but I was around so many inspiring, creative people, there were a lot of keen photographers there and it really revived that side of me. I bought my first semi-pro DSLR in 2011, 4 months later I bought a pro-DSLR and quit my job (yikes!). I had found what I wanted to do and nothing was going to stop me!
How would you describe your particular style of photography?
It probably sounds like a contradiction in terms, but… creative documentary! I shoot what I see, I hate posed, awkward shots, I like capturing moments that would otherwise remain unseen and showing the couple the parts of the day that they weren’t aware of (a recent couple referred to me as a ninja, which I thought was pretty cool!).
However, I try to work with lighting and composition to take the most creative, interesting photos I can, and some shots are just begging to be taken even if they aren’t 100% ‘natural’. If there’s a great opportunity to take a ‘wow’ photo with a little direction or clever lighting, I will always suggest it, but it’s completely up to the couple if they want to do it.
If you could go anywhere in the world and photograph any couple who would that be, why and where would you go?
Oooh, any couple ever, would be Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner, in Manhattan at Christmas. I love West Side Story soooo much and I think Natalie Wood would have been fabulous to photograph in New York. And New York at Christmas is magical.
Any living couple… probably Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis in Thailand, because they’d be great fun and Thailand is just so beautiful and colourful.
What’s your most memorable wedding moment so far?
Oh my goodness, this is a tough question as every wedding has so many amazing moments! One of my favourite moments this year was the wedding of Maegan and Nathan in Porthcawl, Wales. It was such a windy day, we could barely walk outside without everyone almost being blown away.
I remember trying to get couple photos just outside the venue and Maegan’s beautiful full length veil flying up completely vertically over her head. The resulting photos were so cute, such natural laughter from her and such unique bridal photographs!
Give us 5 facts about you…
I love pizza. If I could live off pizza I would.
I’m pretty tall, nearly 5’11. This really helps as a photographer!
I have a 1 year old daughter, called Ella who is the best thing that ever happened to me!
It is my dream to see the Northern Lights someday.
I am a total wuss when it comes to scary movies, I cannot watch them without needing to watch some Disney afterwards and sleep with all the lights on.
When it comes to selecting a wedding photographer, what advice would you give to brides and grooms?
Have a good look at their work, the galleries and the blog, and actually if they have a facebook page too, as this allows you to see how they engage with people and more importantly how people engage with them.
Then meet them or at least have a chat on the phone. You have to know if you ‘click’ with that person as they will be there all day and you need to feel comfortable with them
Finish this sentence. Keep wanting…
To be better, to go further, to do more!!
