Wedding Guests: How to dress appropriately for a wedding
Weddings. Wonderfully joyous occasions can be a nightmare to dress for. To make matters worse, the modern-day wedding can come in all shapes and sizes, colours and themes and levels of formality. And let’s not forget the unwritten rules of wearing certain colours (whites and creams we’re looking at you) which limits your options even further.
In short, if you’re struggling to find a suitable wedding outfit that’s also in keeping with your style, you’re not alone. Read on to find out the dos and don’ts of wedding dressing and prepare to say ‘I do’ to the perfect outfit that won’t run the risk of upstaging the bride!
Follow the dress code to the letter
If there is a dress code, it’s normally stated on the invitation. Many couples will decide on a dress code depending on the style or vibe they’re hoping to create. For ultra-smart weddings, black tie is usually requested and that means brushing off your finest tuxedos (bow tie included) and elegant evening gowns.
For daytime weddings, it’s usually a little more casual. Gents are always safe with a smart blazer, tie and smart pair of brogues whilst ladies always hit the mark with a simple dress, co-ord or jumpsuit amped up with gorgeous accessories.
Dress for the season
The time of year can give you some ideas about appropriate wedding attire too. If you’re lucky enough to attend a beach wedding in the middle of summer, opt for a breezy, informal style that is easy to move around in. Summer weddings in general favour light, pastel shades which can be adopted by men and women.
As for cosy winter weddings, play around with dark colours, have fun with beautiful fabrics like velvet and don’t be afraid of sequins. Go even more glam by staying warm with a faux fur shawl or pair of opera gloves.
Wear comfortable shoes
Weddings always require a lot of standing around. Whether it’s milling around with drinks and canapés after the ceremony or tearing up the dancefloor until the early hours, your footwear can dictate how much fun you’re going to have. Leave the sky-high heels at home and opt for smaller heels. And if you simply can’t resist your platforms, take along some flat shoes for later on.
There’s no harm in wearing what you already own
Is anyone else burdened with dozens of wedding outfits that they will never wear again? Why not reuse some of them? If you’re conscious about being seen multiple times in one outfit, consider getting it altered or wearing it a different way.
Let’s face it, there aren’t many other occasions in which your wedding outfit will be suitable, so you might as well enjoy these gorgeous garments whenever you can!
