With warm winters and scorching summers, spectacular scenery and a rich culture, Turkey is a fantastic destination for a honeymoon. While the beautiful beaches will likely be the main feature of your itinerary, don’t overlook the country’s diverse cities which range from architectural masterpieces to the characterful contemporary capital. Explore the four cities which would make your Turkish honeymoon even more magical.
- Antalya
For Turkey holidays based around the beach, look no further than Antalya, the capital of the Turkish Riviera commonly called the Turquoise Coast for its stunning emerald waters. Despite being much smaller, the city rivals Istanbul in terms of popularity and offers plenty beyond its spectacular shores.
Stroll the old town, Kaleici, a maze of pretty houses and parks with striking walls which stretch down to the sea. Ride the glass elevator at the harbour to a viewpoint to survey Antalya’s old and new areas, and return in time to watch the sunset over the water. Shop for spices and crafts at the markets and seek out intimate restaurants serving incredible local cuisine.
- Edirne
Celebrate the diversity of Turkey in Edirne, a former capital of the Ottoman Empire that today has a decidedly European culture due to its proximity to Greece and Bulgaria. Poised at the meeting point of two rivers, this once-influential city is surrounded by verdant vegetation which you can explore on well-trodden walking trails. One route, the Sultans Trail, leads all the way to Istanbul!
The atmosphere in Edirne is blissfully relaxed and there’s no shortage of contemporary cafés where you can cool off with a drink. In contrast, the buildings are a constant reminder of its stately past. Majestic mosques including the UNESCO-recognised 16th-century Selimiye stretch up towards the sky and bustling bazaars overflowing with colour are abundant.
- Bodrum
Also backed by lush countryside is Bodrum, a coastal gem on the southwest coast a short boat ride from Kos and the rest of the Greek Dodecanese islands. The water here is crystal clear, perfect for snorkelling and scuba diving, and there are many quiet coves to sail to. Inland are picturesque vineyards where you can enjoy a wine-tasting experience away from the crowds.
Although bestowed with a Roman amphitheatre, medieval architecture and a mighty centuries-old castle, modern-day Bodrum has a refined feel with white-washed houses, twin upmarket harbours, high-class hotels and restaurants and a lively nightlife.
- Istanbul
No list of Turkey’s best cities would be complete without Istanbul which is iconic for a reason – or rather, several reasons.
Its geographical position straddling Europe and Asia made it a key base for three dominating empires, granting the city an extraordinarily diverse culture. This fascinating history is evidenced in the astonishing heritage buildings which range from the incredible Byzantine Basilica Cistern to elaborate Ottoman mosques and palaces and can be viewed from the jewel-coloured waters of the Bosphorus Strait by boat tour.
Contemporary culture is excellent here too. Visit the archaeological or art exhibitions at world-class venues, dine on delicious international cuisine and experience Istanbul’s vibrant nightlife.
