Helllllo… are you having a fab bank holiday weekend? Shame about the weather huh! Well, I’m hope you’re not letting it get you down too much and are still having a fab old time…
Today I am sharing with you these gorgeous bridal accessories by mother and daughter team Jill and Georgie of Port Out Starboard Home based in Bristol. This talented duo re-work beautiful vintage pieces, restoring them to their former glory or turning them into bespoke beauties…
I love how they came up with their name too…
People often ask how we got our name! We thought long and hard about our name and wanted something unique to convey times gone by when well-to-do people would dress beautifully in hats and gloves and spend their time cruising on luxury liners and visiting ports of the world. We believe our unique and glamorous accessories are perfectly suited to this wonderful lifestyle and era.
We were reminded of P-O-S-H (Port Out Starboard Home) which was coined in the days before Air-conditioning. On the outward voyage to India, the cabins on the Port side got the early morning sun and had the rest of the day to cool off. Conversely, the Starboard cabins were intensely hot in the afternoon and like ovens at bed time. On the homeward journey the situation was reversed and it was the unfortunate passengers on the Port side who roasted. VIPs travelling were given preference of the cooler side of the ship in each direction and were given cabins which were Port –Out-Starboard-Home. Their tickets and baggage were marked POSH! We felt this name conveyed the First Class VIP image we would like to portray with our collections, and so that is how we came up with our name!

They handcraft unique and beautiful hair accessories for weddings and special occasions, using vintage brooches, earrings, buckles and necklaces in their designs. These gorgeous one-off pieces, which are made of rhinestone, paste and pearls, have an amazing lustre, sparkle and luxurious feel. All the jewellery pieces are lovingly restored to their former beauty by replacing lost stones, crystals or pearls.
The inspiration for the combs and hairband designs comes from researching historical fashion from a glamorous bygone era when hair was adorned for day time and evening.
The pair also use silk and satin in some of the designs, their bows and birdcage veil creations have proved very popular with brides planning a vintage style wedding. They also have a small collection of exquisite, unworn tiaras from the late 1940s.
Jill and Georgie have received a great deal of interest in their bespoke service and have had some interesting commissions from brides and ladies searching for something out of the ordinary. Clients have an idea of the ideal accessory they would like and enjoy discussing their ideas for a design, often based on the colour or theme of the wedding or special occasion. Much of Jill and Georgie’s work also includes hair accessories for bridesmaids, flower girls and Mothers of the bride as well.
The team has had a number of exciting opportunities since their launch in September 2011! They have designed a bespoke headband which was worn to a film premiere, created a glamorous hairband for a Greek themed wedding in Las Vegas and experienced the thrill when one of the headbands was used in a TV show which will be aired in the spring (details top secret at the moment!).
“We understand the importance of having everything perfect and of the highest quality for special occasions, whether it is a wedding or event. We take time to meet with our customers in their own homes to discuss the occasion, format of the day and wherever possible view dresses and accessories to ensure our designs fit perfectly with our clients’ requirements and within their budget” said Jill.
What do you think? So gorgeous aren’t they!!
