Afternoon ladies, I have a fan-tab-ulous post today from the lovely Kari of Boho Belle Makeup & Hair Styling! Kari talks about how to achieve the modern vintage look for your wedding day. Such great make-up advice on getting vintage right and completely relevant to today’s modern brides. Thanks Kari :) XxX
In recent years there has been a massive move in style from traditional to vintage weddings and although this trend is still on the rise, more and more brides are looking for a move away from traditional vintage.
I was recently on a photo-shoot for a vintage label and the idea behind it was to appeal to women who don’t do vintage and this got me thinking!
Rustic, Boho and DIY-inspired weddings are adding to the mix and instigating change by incorporating vintage into a modern 21st century style. DIY inspiration is everywhere, from homemade favors, back-garden weddings, to bridal DIY makeup and hair tutorials on you-tube.
Many women love vintage but are unsure how to get that vintage-inspired makeup look without looking like they are stuck in the 1950’s or yesteryear. So unless you are trying to re-create the authentic look, you need to build on a vintage trend, bring it up-to-date and make it your own.

Fashion designers use and then abuse vintage styles, they rip it up, they don’t directly copy. They update it by juxtaposing decades with unconventional cuts and patterns and materials to achieve their own style. It should be the same with makeup.
Lippy:
Red is amazing for instantly transforming your look into vintage, but by choosing the right red it can bring the look bang on trend.
Russian Red by MAC is one of my favorites, but this is old school Hollywood glamour in a tube. Instead apply MAC’s So Chaud or Kiss Me by Rimmel and you can easily create a modernized vintage look.
But remember: red is a tricky one, you have many things to take into account when choosing your perfect red: skin tone, wedding dress style, hair colour, hair style, other makeup, wedding colour theme, etc. Does your hubby-to-be even like you in red (you want to please him too, it is both your wedding day after all)?

Au Natural:
Always take in to consideration what impact you want from your makeup. Nudes and minimal eye makeup are perfect for a natural look but if you want definition this is not the way to go. But by adding eyeliner just to your waterline this can create a soft impact which is not instantly thought of as vintage, but add a red lippy and ta-da!
This look works so well with flawless skin. If your skin is not made of porcelain, do not fear there are so many amazing products out there to help make it appear that way! One of my favorites which I use on my clients is Giorgio Armani’s Luminous Silk foundation. This is a light buildable product and gives effortlessly perfect skin.

Give it a flick!
For me, eyeliner-with-a-flick epitomizes vintage glamour and I love it. Using this as a base and adding to it can create a modernized version. Adele’s makeup is a beautiful example of this, by simply adding a bit of shimmer under the eye or a shimmery lippy you can create and alternative vintage look.

Paint:
One way of updating your look is by carefully choosing the shape of your nails depending on the colour you have chosen. Red or dark colours go well with short manicured nails or give your French manicure a twist by adding a splash of colour on the tip or going for the ‘reverse’ manicure as seen below. You can also look online for more nail tips on sites like Cote.

Why not mix it up!

Or go a bit dotty!

Little touches and the thoughtful details make up the big picture on your wedding day, from those carefully designed invitations, the vintage bracelet you borrowed from your bridesmaid to the waterproof mascara and lip stay lip stick (there will be lots of kissing!). With all this careful consideration and imagination you will have the perfect look for your vintage-inspired wedding!
What kind of make-up are you going for on your big day ladies? I LOVE the dotty nails {so cute} and the colour flicked eyeliner {stunning!}.
