Hello hellooo! I recently posted some very useful advice on how to be creative with your wedding cash {weddings can be expensive little buggers can’t they?}. In these austere times it’s become the norm to up-cycle and there’s absolutely no reason why this can’t extend to your wedding day too. Now, I’m certainly not talking about having a budget / cheap as chips wedding. Oh. no, no, no… you can be a chic, stylish and eco friendly bride whilst saving your pretty pennies too. What’s more, these pretty pennies can be put towards other important and non negotiable areas of your wedding day… yay!
So that leads me onto todays post. I’m super duper proud to welcome a fabulous entrepreneurial lady who set up her own preloved wedding website. Sell My Wedding is the perfect place to purchase or sell chic and stylish wedding decorations, dresses, bridal accessories and the like. Let’s get to know my new sponsor a little better…
Rebecca Aspin (32) is founder of Sell My Wedding an online marketplace where newlyweds can sell their preloved wedding items to brides-to-be. The website launched last July and is helping brides across the UK recycle their weddings – from the dress to the decorations.
Rebecca lives in Beverley in East Yorkshire and juggles Sell My Wedding with a day job in public sector communications and a toddler!
How did Sell My Wedding come about?
As a newlywed myself I was looking for a way to share all the fabulous items from my wedding with another bride. Three years on, many of the items from my December wedding were still in bags and boxes. It seemed such a shame and waste to banish such beautiful items to the loft, never to be used again.
On investigation, I couldn’t find a UK website that specialised in selling second hand wedding items. Although there were websites for selling second hand wedding dresses, there was nothing out there where you could literally sell everything to do with your big day. I thought that such a marketplace would not only be a great way to help make a wedding more affordable but it would also enable brides-to-be to gain inspiration from newlyweds, who had already done the hard work by trawling websites, magazines and shops to find the perfect items for their wedding.

Tell us a bit more about the website?
Sell My Wedding puts newlyweds who are looking to recoup some of the cost of their big day in touch with brides-to-be who are not only looking for inspiration but a way to make their wedding affordable. Sell My Wedding lists everything to do with weddings; from veils to vases. It also features items for the whole wedding party from grooms to pageboys, ushers, bridesmaids to the mother-of-the bride.
How the website works is that sellers simply pay a one off fee of £20 to list an unlimited number of wedding items (although it is currently half price just £10 – so sign up quick). There are no individual listing fees, no sales commission and items don’t expire until they have been sold. Sellers can upload their own items, including photos and manage their listings; they also have a profile page so that they can add details about their own wedding and suppliers to help inspire other brides.
Buyers can search the website via an extensive category list, by season or by theme. To contact a seller they simply register as a buyer (which is free) and then they are able to access the seller’s email address to contact them directly. So in effect the website is a notice board – a wedding marketplace to put buyers in touch with sellers
What items are selling well?
Sellers that do really well on Sell My Wedding are those who list a number of items from their wedding and who take the time tell their story of their wedding on their profile page. We had one seller who sold her entire wedding within 24 hours to the same buyer.
Reception decor particularly bunting, signs and paper lanterns sell very quickly on the site, as do centrepieces and vases.
Vintage crockery is also selling like hot cakes as are vintage props such as suitcases and old fashioned sweetie scoops.
Designer wedding dresses, for example Jenny Packham and Ian Stuart are quick to sell, and veils and accessories are also popular items.
Any tips about buying preloved?
If you are looking for a 1950 s style wedding dresses you should definitely search for a preloved dress first. As the dresses are short they do not have marks or wear and tear from trailing on the ground.
Don’t be afraid to buy preloved – just because it’s a wedding, everything does not need to be brand new.
Any advice for selling preloved?
Price your items accordingly if you want a quick sale, as a rule of thumb half of what you paid is a good starting point. Make sure that you list any marks or flaws so that the buyer has the full picture about what they are buying.
Have you sold many items yourself?
I have sold hats, fascinators, my table centrepieces, decorations¸ crockery, jam jars – a whole host of items. I have really enjoyed getting to know my buyers and still keep in touch with them and their wedding plans on twitter.
Any plans or developments in the pipeline?
We are just about to introduce an option so that our sellers can choose to either sell their items or hire them to another bride – this was following feedback from one of our seller’s who couldn’t bear to part with her beautiful Alice Temperley Wedding dress but who wanted to share the joy of the dress with another bride. So stay tuned this feature ‘Hire My Wedding’ will be coming to Sell My Wedding very soon!
Would you believe ladies this Mary Poppins styled bridal shoot was put together using all preloved wedding items? It really does go to show, you don’t necessarily need to buy everything brand new. And don’t forget after the big day you can make some money back by selling your wedding items too.
Please join me ladies in welcoming Sell My Wedding to the Want That Wedding blog. Now where did I put my Jenny Packham dress… I might just have to list it…
