Real Wedding

A Fun, London, 1960s Inspired Beatles Wedding: Gemma & Ben

Today’s real wedding is a relaxed 1960s inspired London wedding. Gemma & Ben weaved touches of their love for the Beatles throughout their big day and Gemma wore a gorgeous Claire Pettibone gown and 60s-esq bridal accessories.

Our ceremony was at Islington Town Hall Council Chamber and the reception at The Peasant Pub in Clerkenwell.

We chose these two venues as we wanted a really relaxed atmosphere throughout the whole day. We also love London, as it holds many special memories for both of us.

My dress was from the Claire Pettibone Romantique range, which I got from the most wonderful bridal boutique in Warwickshire. Madi the owner was terrific throughout and I would highly recommend her and her shop to anyone.

I am obsessed with Kate Moss and I loved her style of wedding dress, especially the way it fitted her. I had an idea in my head for a dress which was covered in vintage lace. As soon as I saw the Estelle dress from the Romantique collection, I knew it was the one for me. The capped lace sleeves were beautiful.

As I love the 1960’s, I chose to wear lace gloves and have a halo daisy chain around my head. Both were from The Bridal Boutique. My halo was by Marie Canning, this was made of tiny porcelain daisies with little lemon drops between sterling silver wire.

My Dad walked me down the aisle to Moon River by Andy Williams. We had a harpist during the ceremony who played various songs throughout, adding a few Beatles songs to the mix.

We first met in 2005, but lost touch. It wasn’t until 2011 when we saw each other again at a mutual friend’s wedding, when we realised we were made for each other. The rest is history as they say!

Lori Lee Lace Maxi Dresses from Coast were chosen for the bridesmaid dresses. I wanted the colour lemon to go with our spring wedding.

I adored our hair and makeup artist. I explained we were having a 1960’s vibe throughout the wedding and she styled the bridal parties hair and makeup to reflect this. The small beehives were gorgeous and our makeup stayed on all day and night.

For the flowers I wanted flowers you would have seen at a 1960’s wedding. So we chose white/green parrot tulips, lily of the valley, solomon’s seal and fresh green foliage in the bouquets, buttonholes and corsages.

Our wedding photographer was a dream, the shots he did were superb. My husband and I are mad fans of The Beatles and luckily Ian shared the same passion as us.

Throughout the day we had hints of The Beatles running throughout. The photographer even got us to replicate some of The Beatles album covers for our photos, this really nailed our quirkiness and represented our style.

For the table decorations we had forget me nots, bluebells, cream stocks, yellow poppies and bridal crown narcissus in vintage cut glass bud vases.

We gave everyone an Abbey Road badge with the date of our wedding on it as wedding favours. These were from Kaboom Gifts on Amazon.

Nick and his team at The Peasant decorated the venue perfectly. We gave him all of our decorations we found for the wedding and he made the pub look incredible.

Lettered lights, red hearts, Beatles posters, our G&B stamp on the menus, bunting, old family photos, toiletry basket and a homemade sweet kart were all highlights of the decor.

On the morning of the wedding, the company Bubblegum Balloons set up our oversized helium balloons with tassels hanging from the ceiling.

Having all of our loved ones under the same roof at the same time. Seeing everyone really happy and enjoying themselves made our wedding.

We LOVED our cake. We decided on a white and blue “All You Need Is Love” cake, with silhouettes of The Beatles on the front.

Our cake designer Zuleika Cakes was recommended to us by a friend, she was fantastic. The bottom layer was red velvet, the middle lemon drizzle (with limoncello) and the top was chocolate fudge.

Our first dance was “I Will” by The Beatles. It’s a song that is very special to us.

It really was the perfect day. As John Lennon once said “All you need is love” and our wedding was full of it.

  1. Big red London buses should feature in every wedding! Love the tribute to Abbey Road. One of the guys even went bare foot.
