You’ve found the perfect wedding dress and you can’t wait to wear it to walk down the aisle: but what will you wear underneath? Many women put significantly less thought into what they will wear under their dress.
The wrong wedding lingerie can completely ruin the look of your wedding dress. With that in mind, here’s everything you need to know about choosing foundation pieces to wear on your wedding day:
Pick Your Underwear to Suit Your Dress
If your wedding dress is corseted, structured, or includes a built-in bra then you won’t need to wear an additional bra at all. However, if your dress is looser, or the fabric is thinner, then choosing the right upper foundation garment will be essential. A strapless bra will work with all necklines, whilst multiway bras can be used to offer support under halter neck or one-shouldered gowns.
The fullness of your skirt is likely to help determine which other underwear you should wear. If you have a full skirt, then you have much more freedom to wear whatever you want: any colour or pattern goes, because no one but you (and your partner) will be able to tell. By contrast, a tight-fitting dress is likely to need nude or white seamless underwear so that it doesn’t break up the line of your gown. And if you want a little extra support then shapewear might be your new best friend. Think about your dress first and choose the underwear that will suit it best.
Get the Right Fit
This might be the most important lingerie you will ever wear, so it’s essential to ensure that you get the right fit, particularly if you choose to wear a bra. Call your favourite lingerie store and make an appointment: take a picture of your wedding dress with you so that your consultant can suggest pieces that will work best. Alternatively, if you would prefer to order online, take the time to measure your bra size properly.
The best way to do this is to stand upright without a bra on and use a tape measure to take two measurements: the first should be around your back and under your bust, where the band of your bra would usually sit. The second should be around your back and across the fullest part of your bust. Deducting the larger number from the smaller one will give you your cup size.
Reflect Your Dress
Finally, whilst it’s important to focus on the fit of your lingerie, you shouldn’t forget to choose colours and patterns that you love too! Why not use your lingerie to reflect the style and theme of your dress? So, if you have a bohemian wedding dress then unstructured bohemian wedding lingerie would match perfectly. Whilst structured, elegant lingerie would pair beautifully with a structured and elegant dress. You could even pick out the lace or pattern within your dress and find lace or patterns on your lingerie that match it perfectly. Above all, have fun choosing your lingerie! You should view it as an extension of your dress, and an integral part of your wedding day.
