Top six wedding DIY’s

Top six wedding DIY’s

When you’re planning your dream wedding you may feel overwhelmed by the costs, especially as we approach wedding season which can often cause the price of items to sky-rocket.

Where possible, you could always take matters into your own hands and DIY one or two wedding projects!

We’ve broken down some of the most budget-friendly wedding DIYs to help you get started.

Signage

One of the most popular DIY’s for weddings is making your own signs, whether it be table number signs, larger boards for itineraries or even welcome signs at entrances. A lot of charity shops will sell second-hand mirrors and boards for relatively cheap, meaning all you need to buy is the materials to write with.

To keep things rustic, stick to wooden pallets or boards with white writing. You can download stencils online of your text copy and then cut out the writing to trace through using paint or pens. Alternatively, if you don’t feel confident with a paintbrush, you can always use white marker pens and hand draw your text.

Alternatively, if you have access to a vinyl sticker printer such as a Cricut, you could print your text and stick it to your board or mirror.

A popular trend at the minute involves the use of clear acrylic sheets with paint on the reverse side of the board and the text stuck to the front. This is a great way to add a pop of colour to your wedding day, or even just as a way to tone everything together.

Invites

Another common wedding DIY is the use of software to build your own invites and stationery. Canva is a great option that many couples opt for due to its great variety of templates, as well as the option to start fully from scratch. This way you can save costs as you don’t need to pay a designer, you can simply get some inspiration from Pinterest or Instagram and go from there.

Alternatively, if you are familiar with Adobe Creative Cloud, you could use Indesign to create your invites. For couples who enjoy being creative, this is the perfect chance to add your own flair to your invites. You could paint your own backgrounds, draw yourselves to be put on the invites, design your own font or even hand-make the invites yourself.

There are many great websites which will print your wedding invites for relatively cheap in bulk orders, or you could even have multiple printed on one sheet and then cut to size to save even more money.

Decor

The decor is a great way to showcase your and your partner’s personality throughout your wedding. Your DIY decor may include flowers, colour schemes, ornaments or even accessories to wear.

There are endless options of decor you could make for your wedding and it’s all about showing off your personality as a couple. A common DIY is often a centrepiece for each table.

Some centrepiece ideas include:

Bouquets of flowers

Candlestick decorations

Spray-painted ornaments

Terrariums

Fairy Light jars

Favours

Whilst, not every couple wants to have favours at their wedding, if you do want to have them you can cut the costs by making them yourself.

Popular options include small paper bags of seeds the same as your wedding flowers to plant, biscuits with your initials stamped into them, or even small bottles of alcohol.

If you don’t wish to have much of a favour, you could always make small thank you cards and place them on the tables of your guests. These could be super simple and handwritten for a personalised touch or printed to look a bit more professional. The gesture of a thank you may actually go further than you might imagine.

Cocktails

Although this one is necessarily needed, it’s becoming increasingly popular for couples to have a “his and hers” cocktail board outside or near the board, and this super simple DIY is less complicated than you may imagine!

Any surface that can stand on an easel will work such as mirrors, chalkboards, wooden boards and acrylic sheets. Simply use paint or pens to create a design as pleased featuring the cocktails of choice. Be sure to include the name and ingredients of each cocktail.

If you’re a dab hand at drawing, it’s always nice to feature illustrations of the cocktails too to let the guests know what drink to expect.

For inspiration, you could use Pinterest as a source, and simply search for cocktail wedding boards, or if you go down the chalkboard route you could even use pub chalkboards as reference.

Cakes

Whilst this may be a bit more of a stressful project to take on, you could actually bake your own wedding cake. If you’ve perfected a cake recipe that you and your family love, and are a bit of a baker yourself, you could make the wedding cake yourself and save a bit of money.

This is something that you have to plan well in advance, baking a month or so before the wedding and then freezing until it’s ready to decorate.

Alternatively, if any of your friends or family are keen bakers, you could always ask them to make your wedding cake for you. You may still have to pay them to cover the costs of the ingredients, but it would certainly save you some money that could be spent elsewhere.

Remember you don’t have to DIY every aspect of your wedding, but if you feel confident in doing a few it may be well worth it to cut down the costs.

If you love DIY’s as a hobby, as well as wedding crafts, you could profit yourself by hosting craft workshops for future couples. For example, you could share your tips and tricks for creating the perfect centrepiece or even host a wedding stationery workshop.
