Wedding Guest: Accessories, dos and don’ts!

As summer takes hold, wedding season picks up and while 2020 has been an unusual time for weddings we should see more intimate gatherings taking place in gardens and outdoor spaces to celebrate people’s nuptials.

If you’re attending an outdoor celebration, you still want to look good even if there isn’t a professional photographer at hand to capture your finished look. With this in mind, here are few dos and don’ts when it comes to wedding accessories that you can consider this year and for future events.

Accessories dos

Do shield your eyes

If the wedding is taking place outside, it’s a good idea to shield your eyes to avoid squinting in those all-important candid photos. This means you need some good looking shades that won’t distract from your outfit and still look smart and on-trend. Ray Bans are an ever-popular choice that look stylish and smart all at once while protecting your eyes from UV rays.

Do check the weather

You’ve got your sunnies for that sunshine but it’s important your other accessories consider the weather too. A plain umbrella is a good accessory to bring along, it can be used even while photos are being taken and keep your outfit dry.

A smart scarf is another great accessory idea that can be worn across the shoulders or around the neck if the weather turns and you know you’ll be outside for a long time – British summertime likes to test our patience after all!

Finally, if it’s windy that large brimmed hat might not be the best choice of accessory. No one wants to be running after their hat when the photo sessions start taking place.

Do choose classy and understated accessories

It’s important that your look doesn’t take any focus away from the happy couple so ensure any jewellery or accessories you wear aren’t too loud. That means avoiding oversized flower crowns, enormous clutches with distracting designs and garishly printed ties.

Don’t forget to check the invite

You’ll get an idea from the invite what colour scheme the bride and groom are adopting and can then avoid colours in your outfit that match this if you aren’t part of the wedding party.

It’s important you don’t match the bridesmaids or groomsmen to avoid confusing things.

You can also check what theme the couple are going for. If it’s a black-tie sort of event that means you can go all out with jewellery whereas more casual weddings allow you to opt for easier to wear accessories.

Don’t go oversized with the hat

It’s tempting to go all out with that wedding hat but one, you might block people’s view during the ceremony and two, you might take the focus away from the couple in their wedding photos.

Don’t wear shoes that will cause you pain

This rule is for men and women, choose your shoes wisely. For the ladies, if you love heels but know you won’t last all day in them be sure to take along a pair of flats that you can change into for the evening. For men, ensure your shoes are worn in before the big day – especially if you’re a groomsman as you’ll likely be on your feet throughout the wedding ensuring everything is in place.

And those are just some dos and don’ts for any future weddings you have coming up – whether they’re a social distancing affair in the garden or a future wedding that should hopefully be able to take place away from the restrictions of lockdown
