Today it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the marvellous Charlotte Hu of Charlotte Hu Photography, a talented wedding photographer who wants to capture your big day!
Let’s get to know Charlotte better by looking at some of her lovely work and reading her WTW interview…
WTW readers would love to know about you and your photographic journey…
Who or what inspired you to become a wedding photographer?
I shot my first wedding for a friend two years ago, and loved it. I knew it was the most personal wedding gift I could have offered. Then, when I moved on from friends to strangers, amazingly that feeling remained the same. I get so caught up in the day, and by the end of the wedding, I feel like I somehow know the couple (and their loved ones). Families and friends are so open and joyful at weddings, and I’m lucky to be there to capture those emotions.
How would you describe your particular style of photography?
Photographers bat around words like “reportage” all the time, don’t they? Essentially I aim to tell the story of the day, focusing on candid interactions between people and all the little details, but I think my style is perhaps softer and dreamier than your average documentary style wedding photographer. Recently I ran into the little flower girl of a wedding I shot last year. When asked “do you remember me?” she really didn’t, even though I’d taken many photos of her throughout the day. I see this as a success to my self-proclaimed “ninja photographer” status. I truly do stay out of the way!
If you could go anywhere in the world and photograph any couple who would that be, why and where would you go?
I’m not much of a celebrity follower, but would love to photograph an expressive couple somewhere epic… like Yosemite National Park. There’s something magic about feeling small together in a grand place of mountains and lakes and forests.
What’s your most memorable wedding moment so far?
At a sangeet (Indian pre-wedding party), the English groom and his friends had secretly learned a Bollywood dance routine to perform with the bride’s siblings and cousins. I am so glad I captured the look of complete shock and delight on the bride’s face!
Give us 5 facts about you…
1. I name all my cameras (what a geek). There’s d’Artagnan, Olly, Hans and Fiyero.
2. I grew up in Birmingham but I managed to escape that Brummie accent.
3. My favourite thing to do when I’m not behind a camera is cooking with my boyfriend.
4. Would love the chance to photograph a ballerina in a dance studio.
5. I’m also a qualified accountant – but I finally summoned the courage to quit my full-time office job in 2013 to put 100% into what I really love!
When it comes to selecting a wedding photographer, what advice would you give to brides and grooms?
It goes beyond skills or equipment or style. Definitely meet with your shortlist of possible photographers in person (or at least on Skype) to know if you get along and would be comfortable having them as part of your wedding day. Also give the photographer as much information as you can about what you want.
